Industrial 3D printing delivers parts you can trust in production: 45-89 MPa tensile strength, isotropic, tolerance ±0.1-0.3 mm, batch traceability and certified material. Hobby 3D printing (usually FDM on a desktop) is fine for concept models, but delivers ~35 MPa, anisotropic strength and no process control. Choose industrial as soon as the part enters an assembly or reaches a customer.
Material and certification
Industrial SLS uses qualified powders: PA12, PA11, PA12 Blue MD (FDA + EC1935/2004), Carbon LW. Every batch has a datasheet, a lot number and a traceable production record.
Hobby FDM runs on filament rolls without batch traceability. For end use in industry, medical or food contact, that difference is decisive. An industrial batch can be audited, a desktop print cannot.
Process and repeatability
Our EOS machines are closed thermal systems. Laser power, bed temperature, layer thickness and atmosphere are controlled and documented per build. Print-to-print variation stays within ±5% on mechanical properties.
With desktop FDM, quality depends on room temperature, filament humidity and extruder wear. Fine for prototypes, less suitable for parts that must be identical across hundreds of units.
When hobby 3D printing is enough
For an early shape study, a visual proof-of-concept or an internal conversation model: desktop is fast and cheap. Same for non-loaded enclosures without end-use requirements.
Once the part needs to fit a production line, take mechanical load or reach a customer: switch to industrial. Per-piece price is higher (from €25), but you buy reproducibility and traceability with it.
