Rapid prototyping vs production 3D printing: what’s the difference?

Rapid prototyping is one or a few parts with fast lead time, where iteration comes first. Production is tens to tens of thousands per year with fixed dimensions, documented process parameters and batch traceability. Both use SLS, with different priorities. Prototype: speed and flexibility. Production: repeatability and traceability.

Prototype: speed and iteration

You want to know: does it fit, does it work, does it break? Iterating on shape, function or fit within days. Exact tolerance is a side issue, because you learn per iteration what the design needs.

Standard: PA12, or PA11 when you test snap-fits or bending. One piece, 3 working days, no MOQ. If unsure, our engineers look over the first iterations. Small wall thickness or orientation tweaks often save time and cost in the next round.

Production: repeatability and traceability

Once the part enters the market or an assembly line, priorities shift. Every print has to be within ±5% mechanically identical, every batch traceable. We document process parameters (laser power, bed temperature, orientation) and deliver a Certificate of Analysis per batch.

For large runs we often switch from PA12 to PA 950 HD (35% lower per-piece cost at 47 MPa). For food contact or metal detection: PA12 Blue MD (49 MPa + FDA + EC1935/2004).

What this means for your design

Prototyping tests broadly: shape, function, material, orientation. Production asks: is this design robust for production repeatability? Critical dimensions not on the tolerance edge, walls predictable (1.5-2 mm), stress concentrations rounded.

Our DfAM check flags spots where print-to-print variation could cause reject. For parts you really want to produce in series, a pilot run of 20-100 catches orientation effects or thermal variation before you place a large order.
