When is industrial 3D printing worth it for businesses?

Industrial 3D printing is the right call once you need speed, flexibility or complex geometry. Think runs of 1 to 10,000 parts per year, fast iterations without tool rework, or customer-specific variants that would otherwise require a mould each. Lead time from 3 working days, no setup cost, no minimum order.

3 working days From lead time
1-10,000+ Sweet-spot per year
£0 Tooling investment
7 Polymers available
11 Industrial SLS machines

Four situations where 3D printing helps directly

New product, unpredictable demand. You do not want to put €20,000-50,000 into an injection mould before the market proves itself. SLS starts with 10 parts and scales up to thousands.

Production line with a broken part. Original no longer available, or 8-week lead time. Send us the part or STEP, we print within 3 working days.

Medical device that keeps iterating. Clinical validation demands a new version every two weeks. Each revision goes straight into production, no tool rework.

Structural part that needs to be lighter. Topology-optimised geometry that CNC cannot machine. SLS just prints the skeleton.

When 3D printing is less appropriate

For stable runs above 10,000 units per year in simple geometry, injection moulding wins. The tooling investment gets spread across the volume, per-part cost drops. Same for parts that must be in polycarbonate or glass-clear plastic: SLS does not cover that material range.

In both cases a hybrid path often works. SLS for the first 6-12 months of bridge production, injection moulding once volume and design settle.
