Choose PA11 when your part must withstand shocks, vibration or repeated flex without cracking. With 31% elongation at break, PA11 is considerably tougher than PA12 (18%). Plus 54 MPa tensile, lower water absorption and bio-based (castor oil, ~30% lower CO₂). Ideal for snap-fits, hinges, outdoor applications and aftermarket parts that must take impact.
What sets PA11 apart
PA11 is a bio-based polyamide with notable toughness. The 31% elongation makes it far more impact-resistant than PA12 (18%). Snap-fit you want to bend without breaking, hinge for thousands of cycles, clip that occasionally gets overloaded.
Lower water absorption than PA12, so mechanical properties stay more stable in humid or outdoor conditions. For automotive aftermarket, agricultural equipment and outdoor electronics PA11 is a popular substitute for PA12.
When PA11 is the clear pick
Snap-fit, hinge or flex function. Impact or knocks (protective caps around moving parts). Humid or outdoor environment (exhaust systems, garden electronics, ag). Bio-based or lower-CO₂ material for sustainability claims.
On the fence between PA12 and Carbon LW, and the part must flex more than stay stiff? PA11 is often better than a fibre-reinforced material.
When PA11 is not a good choice
Pure structural stiffness (part cannot deflect) -> Carbon LW, 2x stiffer than PA11.
Absolute maximum tensile -> PA802CF, 89 MPa (also on PA11 base, but much more expensive).
Large runs in structural-standard geometry -> PA 950 HD is 35% cheaper with comparable 47 MPa.
Only price optimisation without toughness requirements -> PA12 is the economical standard.
