Choose SLS if you need a broader material range or higher strength. SLS runs 7 polymers (PA12 through fibre-reinforced Carbon LW and PA802CF). MJF sticks to PA12 and TPU. SLS also works fine from 1 piece. MJF is economically more efficient at larger runs in standard PA12.
Where SLS has the advantage
Material range. SLS runs multiple polymers: PA12, PA11, food-safe PA12 Blue MD, carbon-fibre-reinforced PA802CF, stiff Carbon LW, rubber-like TPU 1301, cost-optimised PA 950 HD.
MJF (HP’s Multi Jet Fusion) is technically optimised for PA12 and a few TPU variants. The agent chemistry is not universal. If your design calls for a specific material outside that narrow set, SLS is the right route.
Where MJF has the advantage
At large runs in standard PA12, MJF is economically more efficient. Faster printing (40-50% shorter lead time) and lower per-piece costs at build fill above 15%. Dimensional accuracy is also a touch higher on large parts thanks to different thermal control.
For projects with 500-10,000+ PA12 parts per year in identical geometry, an MJF partner is regularly the better choice. We say that honestly.
What this means for your decision
Choose SLS if: material outside PA12/TPU scope, run 1-10,000 with varying variants, specific certification (FDA, EC1935/2004), or parts that demand maximum strength/stiffness.
Choose MJF if: pure PA12 production in runs of 500-10,000+, stable geometry, as-shipped surface quality matters.
